Guardian Renaissance

Archangels were a common subject for artists of the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. As the angels of the Presence, with permission to enter God's presence, the four archangels – Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael and Michelangelo were recognized through the religions of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, although their roles were often most documented in the apocryphal writings.
The best known representation of the archangel Michael is located in the Santa Maria della Concezione in Chael first. The work is by Guido Reni, Renaissance painter who was a master of Baroque style that evolved from the edict of the Roman Catholic Church that the religious art must participate with the commoner dramatic and emotional appeal. The sample Reni Archangel Michael blond hair, musculature features androgynous angel hovers over the devil, with his foot on the demon's head forcing him to submit. The painting depicts a scene from the book of Revelation, where the Archangel Michael Angel leads an army against Lucifer and tied him for 1000 years. It is often referred to as the Archangel Michael Slaying the Devil.
The archangel Gabriel was the angel who announced to the Virgin Mary she would have a child of God. This biblical event known as The Annunciation, and is a frequent theme of Renaissance art. Two works stand out as iconic paintings of the subject. Da Vinci's Annunciation was painted from 1472-1475 and is credited both Da Vinci and his mentor Andrea del Verrocchio. In painting kneels before the Archangel Gabriel Mary, the Madonna lily in his hand that historians believe it symbolizes the virginity of Mary.
Cestello Botticelli Annunciation, commissioned in 1489, capture the same event with similar images. The painting is characterized by its use of perspective in paintings lead the eye to the landscape. Gabriel Botticelli paints with his mouth open, to represent the words of the Gospel of Luke which were added as part of the original paintings. Today both paintings can be seen in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.
The angel Raphael was captured more frequently in oil as the guardian of Tobit's son Tobias on his journey to recover money hidden by his blind father, a passage from the Book of Tobit. Her role as god of healing and protector is evident in these paintings that show him leading the child by the hand. Version Filippino Lippi, Tobias and the angel can be seen at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC Rembrandt took great interest in the book of Tobias and the Angel Raphael, making it a frequent subject of his work.
Archangel Uriel Da Vinci used as the subject of two nearly identical paintings titled Virgin of the Rocks or Virgin of the Rocks. The picture shows a scene in which the infant Jesus meets his cousin John the Baptist as an infant. In paintings, the Archangel Gabriel is sitting to the left of Mary holding the infant Jesus. Subtle variations can be seen in two paintings by Da Vinci. In the version of the painting on display at the Gallery National in London, Mary, Jesus and John are halo. In the version that can be seen in the Lourve, Uriel points in John. While the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown has created some controversy over these paintings and the true identity of Jesus in the picture – art historians assume that the original in that in Juan Uriel points, which is closest to Mary has created confusion and the second box of Da Vinci eliminated this gesture.
